Mental well-being is an important issue to address, especially among students. Past studies have shown that students are vulnerable to developing mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and stress. The factors that could affect students’ mental wellbeing include neuroticism, academic buoyancy, and stress. Academic buoyancy is a relatively new concept of resilience and is more holistic compared to academic resilience. This study also extends findings from past studies on the Challenge and Hindrance Stress Framework by exploring it in an academic context. The potential mediating role of academic buoyancy on the relationship between neuroticism and students’ mental wellbeing, and the potential moderating role of challenge and hindrance stress on the relationship between neuroticism and academic buoyancy is explored. A total of 307 participants were recruited via convenience and opportunity sampling methods from different tertiary education institutions across Malaysia. Results showed significant positive correlations between lower neuroticism and mental well-being, lower neuroticism and academic buoyancy, and academic buoyancy and mental well-being. There was also a significant full mediation of academic buoyancy on the relationship between neuroticism and mental well-being. However, there was no support for the moderation of challenge and hindrance stress on the relationship between neuroticism and academic buoyancy. Implications and future directions were discussed. The findings shed light on the importance of academic buoyancy as a factor for student mental wellbeing. Although there was no support for challenge and hindrance stress as moderators, future research could be done to further evaluate the effectiveness of this framework to be applied in an academic context.
