MXenes are a promising class of 2D materials known for their high electrical conductivity, chemical stability, and hydrophilic surface terminations. However, their large-scale application is hindered by the high cost and limited sustainability of conventional synthesis methods, which rely on commercially sourced MAX phase precursors. This study presents a cost-effective and sustainable route for synthesizing Ti3C2Tx MXene using carbon soot (CS), a waste byproduct from vehicle exhaust, as a low-cost carbon source for the formation of Ti3AlC2 MAX phase. Following selective etching, high-quality Ti3C2Tx MXene was obtained. To demonstrate practical utility, a composite material comprising MXene and activated carbon (AC) was fabricated and coated onto coconut fiber (CF), forming a hierarchical MXene/AC@CF structure. This composite exhibited enhanced photothermal performance due to the synergistic effects of CF’s capillarity, MXene’s conductivity, and AC’s light absorption. Under one-sun irradiation (1 kW m−2), the system achieved a solar evaporation rate of 1.6 kg m−1 h−1 and a conversion efficiency of 77.8 %. This work not only offers a green synthesis pathway for MXenes but also advances their application in solar-driven interfacial steam generation for sustainable water desalination.
